Citation Tools and Tips

Keeping track of and accurately citing your sources is essential to any research project - and Capstone is a big one.  Here are some tools and strategies to help you make this process fast and painless.

Database Tools:

  • WISE and many of the individual databases that are available through the library provide tools that will automatically cite an item (book, article, etc.) into the citation style you need (for religion Capstone, this is Chicago).
  • In WISE, click on "Cite/Export" near the top of the screen (see screenshot below).  The name and screen location of this tool is different for each database, but similar to WISE.

Citation Management Tools:

  • Rather than wait until the very end of your project, it is better to manage your sources as you find and use them.  To do so, you can either simply start a list in a word processing document OR create a free account on EndNote Web.  Once you have registered, you can find a "Getting Started Guide" in the upper right area of the site.

Citation Creation Guide:

  • If you are not able to automatically create a citation using the WISE tool shown above, or a similar tool from another database, there is other help for you to correctly cite a source (such as a web site).  Go to the library's Style Guides page to find one that works for you.
